1st Birthday Rubber Ducky Cake and Smash Cake

We just held our Virginia's first birthday party today and it was a success! We served pulled pork sandwiches, salad, and potato salad. It was a rubber ducky themed party and we gave away little ducky door prizes from Target's dollar bins (i.e. ducky luggage tags, ducky bath pillow, etc.). The main event(s), however, were the cakes. I made a three layered red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting for the grown ups to eat and a yellow cake with white frosting for Virginia's smash cake.

Here are some pics from the event.

Springy Easter Cupcakes

These easy and something that could be fun to do with kids.

Baby Shower Floral Cupcakes

This one was a project for me. I decided to create mixed-design cupcake platter for my good friend's baby shower. She was having a boy and so I did blue and yellow flowers.

This was my first attempt at Wilton Royal Roses and I have many take-away lessons...the biggest being that practice makes all the difference. I also did leaves for the first time, and those were surprisingly easy.

Superbowl Football Cupcakes

I made chocolate cupcakes with chocolate frosting for our Superbowl party, and I placed white chocolate football cupcake toppers on each one. I made the toppers by tracing footballs with melted white chocolate onto wax paper and letting them harden.

The concept was cute, but the football structure was too heavy to hold up at room temperature and the white chocolate toppers bent over. In the future when I do cupcake toppers, I will be sure to make them in a smaller design so that they can stand straight up.

Oh well, at least they tasted delicious, so at least it wasn't a total fail :)

The TARDIS Cake

I made this TARDIS cake for my nephew, Ryan's, 14th birthday with the help of my mother. I should mention that she's the one who's inspired me to want to learn cake decorating. She always made adorable and creative birthday cakes for us when we were growing up and she has continued that tradition with her grandchildren.

Back to Ryan...he's a big Dr. Who fan (obviously), so although this poor cake was a bit crooked, it was made in honor of our Ry guy :)

I also made coordinating cupcakes for the chocolate lovers in the family.

The Monster Smash Cake

No first birthday party is complete without a smash cake. I made this cake for my adorable niece, Mia's, monster-themed party. She was quite the little lady, however, and ate her "smash" cake with a spoon :)
